software companies like autodesk, norton, and sun has promoted the use of software subscriptions. just as long you buy the software once, and pay an annual fee, you get any updates and revisions as long as you maintain your contract. now apple in business with AT&T have released the iphone.

is this the start of a software subscription model for apple? to date, final cut studio and mac OS X have software licenses that last in perpetuity. the iphone includes the ability to play music and watch videos, but requires activation. what will happen after the initial subscription is over? will the iphone continue to work, or become a very expensive paper weight? if you continue to pay your phone bill, i’m sure apple will update the applications and iphone OS, but can you get updates without the AT&T contract?

for several years, the next crest of storage has always been 3 dimensional holographic media. two companies seemed locked in the struggle to get their technology to market, inphase and optware. both promise a device by this year in the range of 200 GB to 300 GB, and a few deals have been made, but no hardware yet. when only the light moves, and the disc remains mostly steady, challenges can arise.

the first holographic storage system will most likely be over $10,000 and address only the most needy high volume broadcaster or studio. the consumer versions of such devices most like will not see the light of day until 2010. for the rest of us with 500 GB and 750 GB hard drives with archive in mind, we have the foolhardy disk to disk solution, or a very tall stack of DVD or blu-ray discs. more than likely for 2006 and 2007 we’ll still be using LTO2 of LTO3 tapes for the archive, holding either 200 GB or 400 GB per cartridge.

someone could expound that the departure of bill gates from microsoft is just part of the natural business cycle. when john warnock and charles geschke left adobe systems, it could have been a ending point to photoshop, illustrator, and postcript, but the transition team was successful and i know microsoft will drive toward its inevitable end.

microsoft has it’s foothold, some say a monopoly on the desktop, server, and database industries. microsoft is moving rapidly into the storage arena, and trying to grab the digital living room. bill gates is just one guy, but he was the headliner for microsoft making presentations at comdex, CES, RSA, and winHEC. a portion of the microsoft initiatives have broken, but other actions have become dominant like windows OS, and the office suite. microsoft powerpoint is synonymous with presentation. microsoft word and .doc is equivalent to digital documents.

bill gates is not leaving due to windows flaws, windows viruses, windows spyware, or delayed windows vista. he truly wants to spend his billions on making a dent in world health and education. will bill gates become the next andrew carnegie? we’ll see.

at CES 2006, michael dell reminded the audience that computer users have had high resolution displays above and beyond any high definition consumer box. a HD signal of 1280 x 720 could easily fit on a SXGA 1280 x 1024 and a UXGA 1600 x 1200 panel. higher resolution panels include the WUXGA 1920 x 1200 and a WQXGA 2560 x 1600 fit a highest HD signal of 1920 x 1080. the dell 3007WFP panel lives up to the WQXGA format, but for the first time including a DVI-HDCP input, allowing the use of future protected content from a blu-ray or HD DVD consumer player.

it always seemed foolish that after spending $1000 or even $2000 on a display, you could not hook up a ATSC HD tuner. with DVI-HDCP the tables turn, and any valid DVI signal will be decoded, if it originates from a NVIDIA or ATI card or a next generation disc player. i would suspect that both mac OS X leopard and windows vista will support HDCP for computer playback of protected content.

it’s been some time since the introduction of the first intel based mac systems started shipping. first it was the imac, next came the mac mini, and starting to trickle into the market is the macbook pro. oddly, the only universal versions of apple software beyond the operating system, was ilife and iwork. now, almost three months after the mac+intel adventure, general purpose applications like final cut studio, aperture, and logic are scheduled to arrive on the apple scene.

from reports, the rosetta technology is effective in translating the powerPC code into intel core duo speak, but the performance has not been up to snuff with native algorithyms. of course, safari, mail, ichat AV, itunes, and ical work great, and the expectations of final cut studio and announced features of aperture 1.1 on intel will live up the the partnership apple and intel made last june 2005. we all want the transition from G5 RISC to core dou X86 heritage.

the next generation of chips, based on the intel core microarchitecture look even better, as they will integrate rich x64 architecture, industry leading performance per watt specificiations, and bring the intel processors on par with AMD opteron and athlon processors. intel might have been a little late to the 64-bit party, but with the juggernaught of resources and engineering gusto, late 2006 will be the time apple+intel shines.

as apple transitions from freescale and IBM powerPC processors to intel core duo processors, mac OS X developers must deliver universal binary versions of their applications, which allow native processor performance on both the powerPC and intel platforms. it all seems fine, except once you consider that if you have legacy powerPC version of an application, it becomes completely obsolete once the developer moved to the hybrid universal version.

apple computer has announced a crossgrade program for their pro apps including, final cut studio, logic, and aperture. when these application ship, if you do no fork over the crossgrade fee, your application version will be retired. developers will not continue to support three customers: powerPC only, intel only, universal. that’s too much work to test, so you’ll need the universal version to work properly. most likely major applications will move to the universal code on the next major revision to avoid these upgrade issues. hopefully at NAB 2006, apple will revise all their applications to the next version to make moot the move to universal unnecessary for powerPC workflows.

for the mac user, any announcement from adobe use to receive the same cheers and shouts that an apple product release would receive. that was before apple began releasing products built from the ground up for the mac. apple has more mac developers than anyone on the planet, trying to make the mac the most relevant platform for media production and creation. because apple does not worry about operating peculiarities (worrying about apple quartz extreme as compared to microsoft directX technology), they can customize their applications to sing on mac, instead of concern themselves about a dueling operating system strategy.

when it comes to media development, the mac is the way to go with final cut pro, motion, DVD studio pro, shake, logic pro, soundtrack pro, and aperture. adobe has after effects professional, premiere pro, photoshop, audition, encore DVD, and illustrator. of the adobe production studio, only after effects, photoshop, and illustrator work on the mac. if one needs to edit sound using audition, or authoring a DVD using encore DVD, or even editing a project using premiere pro, you have to use a windows based PC.

the lines are blurring in the coming year as both the mac and windows PC will utilize the same GPU (NVIDIA or ATI), CPU (intel core duo), and motherboard architecture (intel chipsets), so the apples to oranges comparison will no longer hold. no more will we have to guess what operating system based on the powerPC or intel core duo will reign supreme. when we have similar applications that run equally well natively on microsoft windows as well as apple mac OS X on the more or less the same hardware, we will know who makes the better machine.

i look forward to seeing where adobe takes its mac development, as the operating systems will determine the moves and motivations of customers, instead of the decisions of IBM versus intel, or freescale versus AMD. It’s an intel world now. May the best OS win.

two years ago medialive canceled the annual trek to the las vegas strip for comdex, the largest gathering of IT professionals on the planet. no one event has taken it’s place, but the heir to the event this year will be the international CES 2006. historically, panasonic, samsung, cisco systems, and HP gave keynotes, but this year intel, sony, yahoo, and google deliver addresses.

intel has already reshaped their company logo and processor line for what looks be be an incredible year of product introductions. yahoo and google move outside of internet search to offer a whole slew of web services and applications, some may say only now at a nascent level. computer processors and graphics engines have already exceeded the expectations of the average user generating e-mail, simple documents, and balancing a spreadsheet, but with the introduction of high definitions video and multi channel audio, even the consumer wants a few processors to rev up the music rips, transfer of photos on to portable viewing devices, and simple HD editing. What a year 2006 will be.

a week before Christmas is usually a quiet time when companies rev down for the end of the year, but also prepare for next year launches. earlier today in the world of storage, seagate announced they will acquire maxtor. over the last five years, the entire storage arena in the SCSI, SAS, SATA, and PATA has shrunk from many manufacturers to just three major players. in 2001 maxtor acquired the quantum hard drive division. in 2002 IBM hard disk drive division was sold to hitachi. so we have just three major manufacturers of drives: seagate, hitachi, and western digital, with a long shot samsung as a rouge drive maker.

storage has never been cheaper, with some mechanism approaching 25???°¬¨¬®¬¨¬¢ a GB, with normal prices around 50???°¬¨¬®¬¨¬¢ a GB. will pricing and innovation increase, or shunt? 2006 should see the introduction of 1 TB hard drives.

if you wait long enough, everything comes to los angeles. dvexpo west opens at the LA convention center from 7-9 december 2005, and panasonic has prepared a presentation on the DVCPRO HD AG-HVX200 camcorder. so 2006 will usher in a new generation of affordable hidef, along with other computational milestones in the mactel world.

if you would have asked me a few months ago about the intel platform, i would say it was good for the x86 operating systems (solaris, linux, irix, windows), but did not have much of an impact, since i was a mac user. this summer everything changed and i’ve become a intel fan.

intel has some work to do to improve the energy efficiency and performance of their silicon, but in about a year, there stuff will rock our world. they’ve been working on a few initiatives ever since andy grove left the company. they’ve botched up a few items like itanium and the calyley (LCOS) microdisplays. grove lead intel for almost 20 years, replacing gordon moore, until craig barrett took the reign for a short 7 years, and now we have paul otellini. otellini took over in may 2005, and for his debut announced that apple computer is their latest customer. then came the woodcrest, conroe, and merom stuff in september at IDF, and next month otellini will keynote at CES 2006 in las vegas releasing the viiv platform.

i wonder when apple will keynote at CES? so 2006 will be a great year for intel and apple as their partnership may start as early as january at macworld expo 2006 in san francisco, and i can’t wait for some great products. sometime in 2006 we should hear about mac OS X leopard, the successor to mac OS X tiger, which should ship around the same time as microsoft windows vista (Q1 2007). never before, in my recollection have apple customers been privy to such long term planning, and budgeting so we should know when to upgrade systems and applications.

apple has a fantastic digital media platform based on final cut pro. in this suite of products called final cut studio, we have DVD studio pro, soundtrack pro, motion, and complementary shake and logic. these applications make staying on the mac platform worth the long wait, since these apps are so tightly integrated into the OS. they perform well, have regular upgrades, and have a devoted user community. in los angeles, i get to go to three monthly user group meetings:

motion graphics los angeles
los angeles final cut pro user group
los angeles logic pro user group

the future is bright. apple will lead the way into the intel transition. apple consumer electronics like ipod and future stuff will lead in new growth and dominance.

so as the year closes out, merry Christmas and happy new year to all. 2006 should be the true transitional year from powerPC to intel, NTSC (SDTV) to ATSC (HDTV), AG-DVX100B to AG-HVX200, and war to peace (i pray).

dot upgrades are simple, but platform upgrades take some time. i was able to switch from mambo server to joomla server without much data loss, but i did loose a day of hits. sure, the default locations of my installations had changed, so the quick upgrade was out of the question. here are my steps going from mambo 4.5.3 to joomla 1.0.3 for those who want to try.

always start with a current backup of the mySQL database exporting all relevant tables and in the structure tab selecting add drop table, add auto_increment value, enclose table and field names with backquotes, complete inserts, use hexadecimal for binary fields, save as file, with no compression. from there you might have to change the default location of the site and run a the installer script on the original mambo SQL called migrate_Mambo4523_to_Joomla_100.sql to make the administrator panel work again. after a few hours of recovery, you’ll have your very own joomla server up and running. goodbye miro and mambo.

using phpmyadmin i also had to cut and paste the text into the script window, since the browse text file failed every time.

so i thought it would be simple upgrading wordpress from version 1.5.1 to 1.5.2, by simply backing up the mySQL database, writing over the old files, and coming back up, maybe 5 or 10 minutes. now 7 hours later, wordpress and my blog are back online. yes, you should always have a production and test environment, but i thought i knew what i was doing.

my mistake was simple, but fatal. all i had to do was use phpmyadmin to drop the new blank data, and restore the old data from my last backup. when i tried if first, i got an error #1064, and something about bad syntax. i did a google search, and found many suggestions as bleak as it’s all over, to try a second time. after around five times, i thought if i reinstall the basic components it would work, so i removed mySQL, PHP, phpmyadmin, joomla, wordpress, and started from scratch.

i’m using a very robust server from westhost, and everything seemed to be working. i even installed perl and python for good measure, but when i got to PHP version 4.x and even PHP version 5.x it was failing to install. this is a remote install using a powerful site control panel. on occasion it would time out, but i would in the past log right back in to try the install. after 45 minutes of install/uninstall frustration, i decided it was not my multiple browsers, but something on my host computer. i wrote around 11 AM to westhost support, and finally around 4 PM got the fix.

so now with a clean install of the underlying architecture, i thought for sure i could get wordpress up again, but i got the same syntax error. using a fine text editor, textwrangler, i tried my last attempt to cut and paste the table definitions into phpmyadmin, and that solved the odd syntax errors. i don’t know if the browser upload function added special characters or removed backquotes, or what, but a simple text paste solved my seven hour site down warning.

i will be more dutiful next time i want to upgrade my site technology. i will not blame PHP or mySQL and concentrate only on the application.

what you see a macworld you get to use immediately, but what you see at CES comes in october, so i expect to see blu-ray and hi-def recording devices. for all those that are going, do use the best internet technology to find the best prices on flights, trains, and places to stay. i start with kayak, then move to orbitz and travelocity. some airlines only book direct like southwest.

sun microsystems has open solaris for the x64 platform, microsoft was windows XP x64, red hat linux runs on x64, novell SUSU linux runs on x64, and coming next year, mac OS X will run on x64. each hardware vendor can optimize the hardware by selecting various ASIC’s and components to maximize applications to make their respective OS shine. we are just eight months away from the mac OS X tiger x64 release, and data centers around the globe are preparing for the transition.

at the 2005 annual sun microsystems stockholder meeting scott mcnealy, CEO, gave a optimistic view of the next generation of computing. in a matter of a few short years, we’ve moved through the stone age of computing, the iron age, the industrial age, and skipped through the internet and information age, and landed squarely into the participation age.

sun in june 2005 started a share ad campaign, with employees, industry partners, and visionaries. in the new age of participation computing users bid, podcast, download, school, and live on the web. every device, from a handheld, desktop, and light bulb have IP addresses to communication on the participation highway. sun wants to build the infrastructure for the next data center, in direct competition with IBM.

sun has some compelling strengths like complete control of solaris OS and hardware, even though they are moving aggressively into standardized hardware based on X64 architecture. as a company, like other industries, green computing (low cost, low energy density, low administration, high performance) is also a factor.

their technologies to make this all happen are display over IP, star office, java desktop, and java enterprise system.

there’s a twice a year ritual called changing the clocks to either prepare for the return of standard time or anticipating daylight saving time. sometime in 2007 all these rules will alternate again, and the long established time calendar changes.

i find it impressive on how many clocks require adjustment. fortunately, desktop and notebook machine usually have a network time server to work, so their clocks are updated automatically. it’s the DV camcorders, televisions, digital photo cameras, automobile clocks, watches, phones, thermostats, microwaves, wall clocks, cuckoo clocks, and other time pieces requiring modification. every year, another device comes on the marketplace, like an ipod or portable DVD player that also needs adjustment. good luck finding all those devices before 2 AM sunday morning.

i unapologetically am a mac evangelist. in the industries of entertainment, architecture, visualization, publishing, and other creative endeavors the mac platform is the only solution. the tools work and excel on mac OS X and the power mac machines. just listing the applications is a who’s who in the software pantheon: final cut pro, DVD studio pro, photoshop, illustrator, dreamweaver, shake, pro tools, indesign, and maya define entire industries.

last week apple announced three new power mac systems, all with dual-core CPU and access to the fastest GPU’s available from NVIDIA. expect the fastest ATI GPU’s in a future announcement. all machine also inherit faster RAM, and a new PCI-express (PCIe) architecture, a change from the AGP and PCI-X motherboards of previous generations. the old PCI standard was a parallel strategy whereas PCIe is serial, much like the move from IDE/ATA drives to SATA drives.

the user community welcomes the new systems, especially the power mac G5 quad, a sight to behold when it comes out next month. some users are balking that their investments have come to a crash, as PCIe systems will not allow the use of PCI-X or PCI conventional cards at all. PCIe is an entirely new architecture, not just a faster revision of the PCI workhorse cards. this is not a driver issue, but the cards don’t fit, much less work. maybe in the future a riser may come along that bridges from PCI conventional/PCI-X to PCIe, but not today.

in some professional industries the PCI investment may exceed 2 or 3 times the investment in the system, with VBR MPEG-2 boards, SDI boards, audio boards, and connectivity boards easily surpassing $1000 and up. the one consolation to these folks is the CPU rating stayed the same in the 2.0 GHz and 2.3 GHz dual G5, and while they last in the marketplace, the PCI-X machines, along with PC3200 RAM, are still available. get them while you still can, because in a few weeks the only thing out there will be PCIe and PC2-4200 RAM.

apple does not disappoint when it comes to product announcements. independent of any major mac event, apple has sprung several very significant products in the last several weeks. first we got the new imac G5 and video ipod. today the second shoe falls on the powermac G5 quad, a behemoth of a system. you get four processors, and i’m sure several more virtual processors for a great price.

finally the partnership with NVIDIA and apple pays off with the availability of professional graphics cards. we say a farewell to the geforce line and welcome the quadro PCIe chipsets to the mac. now i believe 3D software will work on par with wintel systems and linux systems.

november 2005 cannot come soon enough to get my hands on one of these fantastic products. the intel product line is a long ways away. i predict sometime during macworld SF 2007 with the intel chipsets inside the powermac. portable systems will get intel inside by june 2006.

apple delivers a knock out blow to VC-1 and other proprietary standards. AVC, or advanced video codec, also known as H.264 by the ITU and MPEG-4 Part 10 by ISO/IEC is an open standard developed my many patent holders. VC-1, the public face of microsoft window media 9, along with flash video 8, or on2 video are both welded shut boxes of technology with one patent holder to take the reins.

multiple companies including apple, IBM, Barco, Dolby Laboratories, Fraunhofer Institute, HP, Motorola, Panasonic, Philips, Samsung Electronics, TANDBERG television, and Texas Instruments have all joined forces to give consumers product choice and unlimited possibilities. the fruits of that partnership were the first successful H.264 or AVC product, the sony playstation portable device, and now the second mass consumer product, the apple ipod.

north american disney TV shows are only the start of what is possible in AVC. the codec can scale from mobile phones at 128 pixels all the way to 1080 pixels high definitions images. all media is going to AVC for content delivery for quality, compression efficiency, and broad support through the consumer electronics industry, information technology industry, and broadcast industry.

when apple moved to an open standard operating system, BSD UNIX, most developers and users saw the potential of using GNU license open source software on the mac. slowly, the same transition is happening on the hardware side, as apple will be moving the entire mac line, including powermac, imac, powerbook, and ibook to intel chipsets.

today, apple announced the latest imac, and aside from the wonderful home technology hub, the most significant move in my mind is the retirement of the accelerated graphics port( AGP graphics). most high end graphics subsystems require not AGP 4X or 8X, but higher end PCI-express (PCIe), and now the fall 2005 imac includes a radeon PCIe for access to next generation GPU’s.

sometimes apple surprises the mac community by launching newer technology into the imac in advance of the workstations like the powermac or servers like the xserve. i hope PCIe makes it to xserve and powermac lines very soon, so anyone can access highest ATI or NVIDIA technology.

over the last week, i was a resfest 2005 volunteer at the los angeles egyptian theatre. for a few days and a few hours, i got to see inside a film festival, wander the various theaters, and get a feel for the management of the sales, will-call, and preparation for this unique electronic visual jaunt. the res media group personal are on to chicago for the final leg of the north american tour.

since the festival is digital, all a city really needs is a digital theatre and a input device, be it a tape, hard drive array, or satellite receiving station. the majority of images were HD, but some where at SD resolution. the star of the show was the new technology exhibits from panasonic and canon. resfest not only exhibited the latest in motion capture, motion graphics, animation, avant-garde cinema, and documentary, but previewed for the first time affordable high quality 720p and 1080p motion video capture. what used to cost $125,000 yesterday will be under $10,000 tomorrow. stay tuned.

technology advances, but not as fast as some would want. it used to be called web time, but since humans still build it, it still takes two years of software or hardware development to get something out the door for a fair price. take the introduction of the zigbee protocol. i first heard of zigbee in 2003, but only one company has commercialized the technology well, control 4. take LED LCD backlights. imagine driving a color display beyond the limited NTSC color gamut, but still only once company has product, sony qualia 005, but they too announced today that the qualia line is disappearing.

this Christmas season, i expect to see samsung, sharp, NEC, and other LCD display manufactures to latch on to high color gamut LED backlights, instead of a florescent light, or in a hybrid grid. zigbee any day now will be in the eaton electrical home heartbeat.

in a final note, tripp lite has finally released a product that works natively in mac OS X. ever since mac OS X jaguar, apple has provided system level USB uninterruptible power supply (UPS) support. only APC had products, but now tripp lite announced the SMART1000LCD for a great price and 1000VA.

i wonder if history will look back on this era and highlight the major foci of this generation. first we had 9/11, followed by the iraq occupation, followed by abu ghraib, and today katrina. this is my country’s legacy and heritage that will most likely outlive us all.

someone shorted out the city of los angeles (LA). millions of customers of the LA department of water and power lost power at 12:30 PM on 12 september 2005, and half the city continued to be electricity free for most of the afternoon. it was a massive power surge that took out the city of los angeles.

this is a cold test of the vulnerability of LA to any type of attack. in a scenario of radiological or biological strike, a blackout event draws people out of their homes and business into the street to find out what happened. in a few short minutes the toxic agent is released, and since a bulk of the community is outdoors, gets an exposure. fortunately, it was not an attack, but shear incompetence. still, it is a terrible test that LADWP failed miserably, that a crossed wire could cripple a city for over three hours, and for some ten hours!

Cloak Media Portal Launch

LOS ANGELES-September 8, 2005-Cloak Media introduces a web portal site dedicated to the coming solid state high definition entertainment and electronic news gathering workflows and toolsets. The site’s focus is on how Apple solutions like Final Cut Pro, Mac OS X Client, QuickTime, and Mac OS X Server meld into the new era, as video tape is eliminated and replaced by flash memory devices and video ingested to storage area networks (SAN).

Cloak Media news topics include the comparison of iSCSI SAN to fibre channel SAN, IBC 2005 Panasonic announcement of a prototype AG-HVX200 DVCPRO HD camcorder, next generation gigabit SAN via internet protocols (IP storage), Intel processors inside the Mac, and the software a media architect will use to transform information and broadcasting.

As computer platforms move into the living room, into palm sized devices, and into wireless devices, the production pipelines must become more effective, and demonstrate reductions in system administration. Use Cloak Media portal to manage the ebbing information technology maelstrom.

Pricing and Availability
The Cloak Media website, at www.cloakmedia.com is available immediately free of charge.

the worse case scenario sometimes happens. in any disaster plan, always the question has to be asked: not that is the least likely outcome or least costly outcome, but what will hurt the most and how can we prepare for complete tragedy? the situation in the gulf coast region of the USA is a national scar and appalling.

in a recent press stop, while the president toured the area, the crude oil pipelines and mississippi river shipping lanes are 80% up and running, while people die of dehydration and starvation in the streets of new orleans. where is the berlin air drop? i see shadows of the fall of Bagdad, when the oil ministry was protected, while looters raided the city and burned it down.

now new orleans is baghdad! where was the planning for the worst case, that is now reality?

i am a nemetschek vectorworks customer, and for the longest time have been waiting for the nemetschek companies to start sharing their technology portfolio.

one compelling reason autodesk is a strong industry leader, is they leverage their entire software library and sister companies. autodesk acquired both discreet logic, maker of 3DS max and combustion, along with revit technology corporation and their revit application. when they exhibit, at the american institute of architects or other tradeshows, they show all their applications and a great workflow moving though the entire product suite. i hope nemetschek follows this trend, using allplan, vectorworks, and cinema 4D to make a fantastic suite than can compete with any autodesk offering.

i am interested in taking cinema 4D and vectorworks combined to generate human scale animations and presentations. i talked with maxon at the siggraph 2005 exhibition, and was told that each business arm of nemetschek operated independently, so much duplication of effort instead of collaboration. so autodesk rules the day with a great suite, and maxon, nemetschek north america, and nemetschek AG wither on the vine.
